I sat on the bank of the stream in total amazement. It was early morning, the water was clear and cool and after an hour of fishing the nearby riffles not even a strike. Never before had this stream been like this for me. The small ranch I was on was very secluded and the owners rarely let anybody in to fish. The water was still low for an early June day but that shouldn't cause the fishing to be so poor. As I looked down stream into the slow pools I could see the occasional sip and tail fin of the rising trout. This river is known locally for its nice rainbows and extraordinary browns. I always used the traditional hare's ear or yellow humpies. Today however nothing.....

I sat there pondering my next move, eating a peach when it happened. A slight breeze stirred and all of a sudden the water came alive. Then another gust and the trout were in an instant frenzy. I had never seen this before, not on this river anyway. I waded into the water and netted some insects from under the willows. There it was, a small caddis hatch. They were falling off the banks and into the water to the waiting trout.

Needless to say, I had come prepared for nymph and mayflies, not a caddis in my collection so that day I went home fish less. After several years of pondering that day's events and watching the same stream it dawned on me. I keep notes on every trip I take, that day as well as several days prior to it were unseasonably warm. At least in the lower elevations like I was in. All the conditions needed for the caddis to hatch had been met, even before the spring runoff. I never returned to those waters without a fully loaded fly box.
